Year 6

Welcome to Spring 2, Year 6. As we continue through this blessed month of Ramadan, let’s focus on showing patience, gratitude and excellent effort in all that we do, both in our learning and in our character.

 English

This term in English, we will be reading 'Street Child' by Berlie Doherty, a gripping historical novel set in Victorian London that follows the journey of Jim Jarvis as he faces the harsh realities of workhouses and life on the streets. Through this text, we will explore themes of resilience, injustice and hope, using it to inspire thoughtful discussion and powerful writing.

Through this powerful text, we will explore the theme of resilience in the face of injustice, as well as poverty, hope and survival, using the story to inspire thoughtful discussion and impactful writing.

Guided Reading

As part of our preparation for SATs, Year 6 will be using CGP Reading Comprehension materials to develop their reading skills. The children will practise reading a range of texts, including fiction, non-fiction and poetry, while answering questions that focus on retrieval, inference, vocabulary and explanation.

These sessions will help pupils build confidence, improve reading stamina and become familiar with the style of questions they will encounter in the SATs reading test. We will also spend time discussing strategies for approaching questions and checking answers carefully.

Maths

This term in Maths, we will be revisiting and strengthening our understanding of key topics including measurement, algebra, ratio and geometry. We will focus on developing accuracy, reasoning and problem-solving skills to ensure we feel confident and fully prepared for the challenges ahead.

Alongside this, we will be completing SATs practice to strengthen our confidence, accuracy and reasoning skills across key areas of the curriculum. This will help us identify gaps, refine our strategies and ensure we feel fully prepared and self-assured for the assessments ahead.

Computing

This term in Computing, pupils will be learning about internet safety, focusing on how to use technology responsibly and protect themselves online.

Science

In Science this half term, Year 6 will be learning about changing circuits. The children will explore how electrical circuits can be adapted by adding or altering components, and investigate how these changes affect brightness, volume and overall performance.

Through practical investigations and careful observation, pupils will build, test and modify circuits using components such as bulbs, buzzers, switches and motors. They will develop their scientific vocabulary and deepen their understanding of how circuits work, using evidence to explain and justify their findings.

Geography

In Geography this half term, Year 6 will be learning about South America, with a particular focus on Brazil. The children will explore the continent’s location, countries, major physical features such as rivers and rainforests, and key human features including cities and population.

Through map work, research and comparison studies, pupils will compare aspects of Brazil with London, examining similarities and differences in climate, culture, land use and daily life. They will develop their geographical vocabulary and deepen their understanding of how places around the world are both connected and unique.

Art

In Design and Technology this half term, Year 6 will be exploring mechanisms, focusing on how gears work to transfer movement. The children will investigate how different gear sizes can change speed, direction and force, developing their understanding through practical experimentation.

Pupils will then apply their knowledge to design and make their own vehicle using a gear system. They will test, evaluate and refine their models, considering how effectively their mechanism works and how it could be improved.
