ENGLISH
In Spring 2, we will be reading Shackleton’s Journey by William Grill. This exciting book takes us on an adventure into Ernest Shackleton’s incredible Antarctic expedition. Students will explore the challenges Shackleton and his team faced, examining how they demonstrated resilience, leadership, and teamwork to survive. Through this story, we will delve into the rich use of language, character development, and historical themes. Throughout the term, we will focus on expanding vocabulary, considering the author’s intended audience, and analyzing how different writing styles and techniques are used to tell the story. In addition, students will also be reading Varmints, which will complement our exploration of language and storytelling.
GUIDED READING
This term’s Guided Reading lessons will focus on Holes by Louis Sachar. This gripping and cleverly structured novel will take students on a journey filled with mystery, humour, and unexpected twists. As we follow the story of Stanley Yelnats and the unusual events at Camp Green Lake, students will explore themes of friendship, justice, and fate. Throughout our lessons, we will engage with retrieval and inference questions, summarise key events, and make predictions about the characters' actions and motivations. We will also continue to develop reading fluency through reading aloud and build vocabulary to deepen understanding of the text.
Children should be reading at home for at least 10 minutes every day and are given a book to read. Please ensure that children update their reading records daily. Children can also access their online library through Bug Club. Details to login are on their reading records.
MATHS
This term, Year 5 will focus on geometry, position, and movement. Students will explore properties of shapes, angles, symmetry, and coordinate grids while learning how to describe and plot positions with accuracy. They will also investigate transformations such as reflection and translation. We will emphasise practical problem-solving strategies and ensure that all students build confidence in working with these concepts. Through interactive learning and hands-on activities, students will deepen their understanding and develop a strong foundation in these key areas of mathematics, helping them thrive and enjoy the subject.
COMPUTING
In Spring 2, Year 5 Computing will focus on creating and using spreadsheets. Students will learn how to organise data, use formulas, and create charts to represent information effectively. Through structured lessons, they will explore key spreadsheet functions, such as formatting cells, performing calculations, and analysing data. Hands-on activities will encourage problem-solving and logical thinking as students apply their skills to real-world scenarios. This unit will help them develop confidence in using spreadsheets as a valuable tool for managing and interpreting information in a fun and engaging way
SCIENCE
This term in Year 5, we will focus on forces and their effects. Students will explore key concepts such as gravity, friction, air resistance, and water resistance, investigating how these forces impact movement and everyday life. They will also learn about mechanisms like levers, pulleys, and gears, understanding how they help make tasks easier. Through hands-on experiments and interactive lessons, children will develop a deeper understanding of the science behind forces and how they operate in the world around us.
TOPIC
In History, we will focus on the Vikings, exploring the history, culture, and key events of this fascinating period in British history. Students will learn about the Viking invasions, their settlements, and the impact they had on Britain. They will investigate aspects of Viking life, including their society, beliefs, and daily routines, as well as the role of Viking kings and warriors. Through engaging lessons, children will explore the Viking legacy and how this period shaped the development of modern Britain. This study will help students gain a deeper understanding of historical timelines and the significant influence of the Vikings on our country’s history.
DT
In DT we will be focusing on mechanisms, specifically making a moving vehicle. Students will explore the design process, learning how to plan, create, and evaluate a working model of a car using different materials and mechanisms such as wheels, axles, and levers. They will investigate how simple mechanisms work and apply this knowledge to design and build their own moving car. Through hands-on activities, students will develop problem-solving, planning, and construction skills, while gaining an understanding of how mechanisms are used in everyday objects. This project will allow them to express their creativity and engineering skills while learning about the practical application of mechanisms in design.
PE
P.E. will be on Tuesdays. Please ensure that your child comes to school wearing their P:E kit on that day.
Please can children bring a refillable plastic water bottle every day.
"If there are any questions or worries relating to your child please do not hesitate to speak to me."
"Thank you in anticipation of your support this term."
